Gray’s Inn is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion as a fundamental principle of all that we do and are. As part of our commitment to taking a proactive approach to educate ourselves and adopt inclusive practices, the Inn is actioning reviews of our current practices.

In November 2023 Gray’s Inn undertook a membership wide consultation seeking views on whether the title ‘Master’ should be retained or abolished within the Inn. A wide diversity was represented.

Masters of the Bench are elected from our membership and comprise experienced barristers, judges and persons of outstanding public eminence and distinction. As a membership organisation, the responsibility for the organisation and running of the Inn is divided between our Benchers, Members and its Chief Executive, namely the Under Treasurer.

The Inn’s consultation has been concluded and on 8 February 2024, Pension (the governing body of Benchers) voted to retain the title of Master.

In total, 78% of Pension took part in the vote and a two-thirds majority vote was required to effect change.

45.6% of those who participated voted to retain the title, while 54.4% voted not to retain the title. As a ‘no’ vote of two-thirds or more was required by Pension, the title of ‘Master’ was retained.

In retaining the title of Master, Gray’s Inn will continue look to the future whilst remaining proud of our traditions and history. We will continue to ensure that the position of Master of the Bench, as the most senior role within the Inn and a marker of a successful career as a Barrister and of distinguished service to the Inn, is a position to which all of our Members, from any background, can aspire.

If you would like to learn more about the history and meaning of the title, ‘Master’ at Gray’s, further information has been published on our website.
